Miracle In Our Midst

June 29, 2023 By Mark Molinoff

Miracle In Our Midst - Sister Wilhelmina Lancaster

There is a miracle in our midst. As reported in The Pillar, “Since mid-May, thousands of people have come to Gower Abbey because they believe a miracle is happening there — that the body of Sister Wilhelmina Lancaster, foundress of the Benedictines of Mary, Queen of Apostles, is incorrupt — still intact, and not decomposed, after four years in the ground.” Read the full article here.

Why Miracles Matter

In the context of supernatural or extraordinary events, miracles hold significance and matter to different individuals and communities, even in today’s world. Most of us experience miracles indirectly, through our study of the Bible or from someone who “knew someone” or “heard something” miraculous.

But today, we are witness to a potential miracle in our midst, positioned right before our very eyes, in the form of Sister Wilhelmina’s uncorrupted body. Jesus said it was better to believe without seeing, but He understood our need to see with our eyes and feel with our hands.

Seeing and Believing

24 Now Thomas, called the Twin, one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 The other disciples therefore said to him, “We have seen the Lord.”

So he said to them, “Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe.”

26 And after eight days, His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus came, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, “Peace to you!” 27 Then He said to Thomas, “Reach your finger here, and look at My hands; and reach your hand here, and put it into My side. Do not be unbelieving, but believing.” -John 20: 24-27

Embrace The Miracle

Assuming that the Vatican confirms what thousands of people have witnessed over the past few weeks, we have a choice to make about how we process this miracle in our midst. We can embrace or dismiss it. The world will provide all the evidence to run with either decision.

Here are the benefits of embracing the miracle of Sister Wilhelmina.

Faith and Belief

Miracles can reinforce and strengthen faith and belief, regardless of our religious background or denomination. They serve as a tangible manifestation of divine intervention, giving us a sense of reassurance and confirmation of our religious convictions. And for those on the fence of belief, miracles can provide the assurance we need to leap into faith.

Personal Transformation

Miraculous events or experiences like the one involving Sister Wilhelmina can bring about profound personal transformations. So it’s little wonder that thousands of people have driven to this remote monastery in Missouri to witness the miracle themselves.

Witnessing or experiencing a miracle inspires individuals to reflect on their lives, develop a more profound sense of gratitude, and positively change their behavior or beliefs. My faith has increased since reading about and exploring this event.

Hope and Inspiration

Miracles often carry a message of hope, offering a glimpse of the extraordinary and reminding people that seemingly impossible things can and do happen. These events provide inspiration during challenging times and serve as a source of encouragement, motivating individuals to persevere and overcome obstacles.

It’s easy to become overwhelmed with life’s challenges and dismiss God’s promises articulated in the Bible. However, when a miracle occurs in our midst, our souls are encouraged and uplifted to trust the word of God. Some believe this particular miracle, appearing amid troubling times, may be God’s way of nurturing our flame of hope when He knows we’re struggling.

Community and Unity

Miracles can foster a sense of community and shared experience. When people come together to witness or celebrate a miracle, it can create a sense of unity, bringing individuals closer and strengthening social bonds within religious or spiritual communities.

One of the most moving parts of the article referenced above from The Pillar was how the local community has come together to help the church handle the crowds and overwhelming interest from thousands of visitors. Homeschool families have volunteered, the local police and firefighters set up a mobile command center at the site, and dozens of others have lent a hand to help the nuns.

Validation of Divine Existence

For many, this miracle in our midst has served as evidence of God’s existence and divine presence. Moreover, it confirms that the universe’s natural laws have once again been transcended, pointing toward a greater reality beyond our comprehension.

Prior to the Renaissance and Age of Reason, people were much more open to ideas about God’s divinity and His manifestations on earth. But rational thinking and the scientific method demand “proof” of all things spiritual, which puts a damper on spirituality. An event like this in Missouri is a breath of fresh air to a society that has become depleted of faith and trust in God.

Healing and Comfort

Miraculous healings or interventions provide comfort and solace to those suffering or in pain. They offer a glimmer of hope for those seeking relief from physical, emotional, or spiritual ailments, instilling a sense of comfort and reassurance.

I am grateful for this miracle in our midst and look forward to more of them in my lifetime. Our skeptical, limited minds need a constant reminder that God is in charge. The uncorrupted body of Sister Wilhelmina Lancaster is such a reminder. All glory to God for this modern-day miracle!
