A 2013 study concluded that acupuncture was an effective treatment to reduce nausea and vomiting. This nausea vomiting acupuncture research found that acupuncture reduced nausea and vomiting after surgery, from chemotherapy, during pregnancy, and associated with migraines.
Nausea Vomiting Acupuncture Research
The periodical Public Library Science published a meta-analysis of acupuncture efficacy in December 2013. In the meta-analysis 30 randomized, control clinical trials were reviewed. Statistical analysis found that acupuncture was an efficient, safe, and economical method in the prevention and treatment of nausea and vomiting.
In 2009, a report prepared by the Cochrane Library described the benefits of acupuncture point PC6 in the prevention of postoperative nausea and vomiting. Compared to sham acupuncture, stimulation of the point PC6 significantly reduced:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Application of antiemetic drugs
There were no significant differences found between the benefits of antiemetic drugs and acupuncture point PC6, except that acupuncture had no complications while the medication did sometimes have side effects.
Postoperative Nausea
A 2006 meta-analysis investigated the benefit of acupuncture in the treatment of postoperative nausea and vomiting. The authors analyzed the results of 12 randomized, controlled clinical studies, proving acupuncture an efficient method of treatment. The efficacy of acupuncture was higher than of acupressure and was not lower than medications.
A nausea vomiting acupuncture research study published in 2012 by scientists working for Cochrane Library concluded that acupoint PC6 significantly reduced postoperative vomiting and nausea. Researchers stated, “Acupuncture is as effective as pharmacotherapy in preventing postoperative nausea and vomiting, with less frequent and less serious adverse events”.
Chemotherapy Induced Nausea
Chemotherapy used with cancer patients causes severe side-effects, including nausea and vomiting. In the past, oncologists were afraid of recommending acupuncture to their patients, as it was not well understood. However, the results of clinical studies conducted in recent years prove the effectiveness of acupuncture in reducing nausea and vomiting during anticancer therapy.
A group led by Professor Mary K. Garcia of the University of Texas prepared a literature review examining the efficacy of acupuncture in the treatment of cancer patients. This nausea vomiting acupuncture research analysis of 41 randomized, controlled clinical studies revealed that acupuncture was a proper method for treating nausea and vomiting induced by chemotherapy.
A group of British scientists examining nausea vomiting acupuncture research drew similar conclusions in 2013. Their analysis of 17 reviews concluded that acupuncture was an effective treatment of nausea and vomiting during anticancer therapy.
Researchers from Turkey concluded that the acupoint PC6 significantly reduced nausea, vomiting, and anxiety in patients with breast cancer. The group found acupuncture an efficient method of treatment for several symptoms in patients, including pain, loss of appetite, nausea, and anxiety.
Acupuncture for Morning Sickness
Nausea and vomiting are common complaints in pregnant women, especially between weeks 5 and 18. The intensity and frequency of symptoms can vary. Nausea and vomiting are sometimes severe, leading to electrolyte disorders, dehydration, and diaphragm spasm.
In these cases, doctors prescribe medications to women. But while these drugs may ease nausea and vomiting, they have side effects and are not ideal. That is why alternative therapies like acupuncture are beneficial. Acupuncture is becoming more and more popular because of its efficacy and safety.
Authors published a meta-analysis of fourteen nausea vomiting acupuncture research studies in 2006. They concluded that stimulation of acupuncture points, including PC6 and SP4, constituted an effective treatment to reduce nausea and vomiting. A published report by the Cochrane Library (37 studies) drew similar conclusions, which focused on various methods to reduce nausea and vomiting during pregnancy.
Migraine Induced Nausea
In 2012, a group of researchers from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Turin presented research on acupuncture controlling nausea from migraines. Doctors examined forty patients with migraines and nausea during six migraine episodes. They randomly selected half the participants to receive acupuncture at acupoint PC6. The intensity of nausea was 50 percent lower in this group than the control group.
The Emergency Ward of a hospital in Melbourne, Australia, conducted another nausea vomiting acupuncture research study. More than half of the patients (57%) reported a significant reduction of nausea and vomiting after receiving acupuncture, and 84.3% said they would use acupuncture again.

What our Clients are Saying
My first pregnancy went so easy. So I was surprised when I got so nauseous with my second one. Every smell made me sick and I didn’t want to eat anything. My mom found Raleigh Acupuncture. The practitioner told me it generally took 3 to 6 treatments to stop the nausea. She was right. After 6 treatments I wasn’t nauseous anymore and could eat again without trouble. I’m very pleased and would recommend them to any pregnant woman suffering from nausea.
When I was pregnant 6 weeks I got terrible nausea and vomiting. I could not hold anything down. I started losing weight after two weeks and my doctor put me on medications. But I was still vomiting every day and felt awful. I found Raleigh Acupuncture and they treated me three times. It totally stopped the nausea and vomiting. I stopped my medications, and the rest of my pregnancy had no problems. They said this was an easy thing to treat. I wish I had known about it from the beginning of my pregnancy.
I came back from a trip to the Caribbean with a terrible case of vertigo and nausea. I couldn’t sleep, couldn’t work, couldn’t walk straight. I had this throbbing headache all day long. It was driving me crazy. I tried acupuncture and in three sessions was completely cured! I was so impressed that I had them treat my back pain next. I only wish insurance covered the treatments.
