How Acupuncture Works
There are many sources of toe pain, including:
- Sports injuries like turf toe, long-distance running
- Hiking in poorly fitted boots
- Kicking a door jam by accident
- Dropping something on your foot
- Stubbing your toe repeatedly
Then there are medical conditions that cause toe pain:
- Morton’s neuroma
- Peripheral neuropathy
- Plantar fasciitis
- Foot cramping
- Turf toe
No matter the cause, acupuncture excels at resolving toe pain. The reason is simple – pain comes from blocked energy (called Qi). Qi flows through channels in the body, including through the feet and toes. Qi stagnation in the feet and toes causes pain, and restoration of normal flow resolves it.
Acupuncture Relieves Toe Pain
Many acupuncture points on the legs, feet, and toes reestablish good Qi circulation. Additional acupoints on the body also boost Qi flow in and around the toes. Identifying the channels involved and utilizing the best points to get the job done is the key to a successful treatment.
When you come for treatment, we first examine your toes. We then determine the affected channels and decide on the best points to heal the toes. For example, big toe pain may involve the spleen channel or the liver channel, depending on the nature of the pain. One situation calls for acupoints SP3, SP4, SP6, and SP9, while another is better suited for the points LV3, LV4, and LV8.
What To Expect
All needles are sterile, single-use, and hair-thin. Treatments are relaxing – many of our patients fall asleep during their sessions. Afterward, you will feel refreshed and rejuvenated. Acupuncture heals while you rest. It opens blocked channels and gets your Qi flowing smoothly again in the feet and toes.
Recent Toe Pain Case
A 28-year-old woman came to our clinic complaining of severe toe pain. She was a long-distance runner training for the Boston marathon. A few weeks earlier, her left big toe started hurting and was not getting better.
We identified the problem as involving both the liver and spleen channels, affecting the medial and lateral aspects of her big toe. We used electroacupuncture for her treatments, as this technique works well in relieving all types of foot-related pain.
Her pain was 90 percent gone within three treatments, and following her fourth session, she was pain-free. And her Boston marathon time ended up being her personal best!

What our Clients are Saying
I developed pain in my big toe hiking the 14ers in Colorado. The foot doctor gave me injections which hurt like crazy and didn’t help. Orthotics didn’t help either. Then I tried acupuncture at Raleigh Acupuncture. Dr. Mark got rid of the toe pain in three treatments. I’ve been going to him ever since for various aches and pains. He’s truly amazing.
For the past 13 years I suffered from peripheral neuropathy in my calf, ankle and foot. I tried numerous medications, therapy with lights, neuromuscular massages and back decompression. I felt like I had stones under the ball of my foot. After the first couple of sessions with Dr. Mark, feelings returned to my calf, ankle and the “stone like feeling” under the ball of my foot began subsiding. Thanks to Dr. Mark, I am able now to walk without pain and discomfort. The extraordinary care and attentiveness I am receiving from Raleigh Acupuncture in treating my neuropathy is remarkable and I recommend them without reserve!
