This article will discuss five patients who came to our clinic complaining of toe pain and how acupuncture resolved their pain. This toe pain acupuncture case series describes just some of the many toe and foot pain issues acupuncture can address.
Toe Pain Case #1 – The Avid Hiker
Our first patient presented with severe pain in both big toes. She was on a quest to climb all 53 fourteen-thousand foot peaks in Colorado with her boyfriend and was well on her way towards that goal. But her toes had started hurting, especially in the joint of the big toes, and she was in constant pain.
At Raleigh Acupuncture, we have developed an excellent treatment for big toe pain. It incorporates electroacupuncture, which targets the area of pain and promotes Qi and Blood circulation. We treated her feet in this way and resolved her toe pain in just four treatments. She was able to continue on her quest with no toe pain.
Toe Pain Case #2 – Peripheral Neuropathy
Patient number two was a former nurse who had developed debilitating peripheral neuropathy in both feet. She was unable to work and was often in so much pain that she had to use a wheelchair. Her pain medications were getting stronger and stronger, but still not managing the staggering pain in her toes and feet.
We treated her with a peripheral neuropathy acupuncture protocol in the hopes she would find relief. And it worked beyond our wildest dreams. Within six treatments, her pain had reduced by 80%. She was able to decrease her pain medications as well. She now comes for maintenance treatment once a month, which keeps her toe pain at a minimum. Acupuncture truly changed her life.
Toe Pain Case #3 – Waitress Toe
Our third patient in this toe pain acupuncture case series was a career waitress at a fancy, high-end restaurant. She was a true professional, earning an excellent income from the fine dining establishment where she worked for nearly two decades. But years of opening the swinging kitchen door with her right foot had, over time, triggered intense, stabbing pain in her big toe.
She marveled at how such a little appendage (her toe) could have such a significant impact on her life. It was now challenging for her to work, and she was beside herself with worry. The podiatrist gave her painful steroid injections, which did nothing to resolve the pain. She sought acupuncture as a last resort.
Our approach to treating her was similar to how we treated our hiking patient. Kicking the swinging kitchen door for all those years had caused long-term bruising of her big toe. Electroacupuncture was able to flood her appendage with large amounts of Qi and Blood, allowing her body to heal. As her toe healed, the pain eased, finally dissipating completely. It took eight treatments to resolve her toe pain completely.
Toe Pain Case #4 – Turf Toe Athlete
Our fourth patient was a high school football player who had been completely sidelined from the team due to a turf toe injury three weeks earlier. His mother brought him to our clinic because his pain was not resolving, and the season was passing quickly. He needed fast relief, and nothing seemed to be helping.
Once again, acupuncture resolved his toe pain by increasing the Qi and Blood circulation in his foot. Foot injuries, including toe pain, are typically slow to heal because they are so far away from the heart, the source of blood circulation in the body. For the same reason, Achilles tendon issues are also slow to heal – circulation is poor this far away from the body. Acupuncture, however, overcomes this deficit by prompting the body to reach out and bathe the injured area with healing-rich Qi and Blood.
Our student-athlete responded beautifully to his treatment. After six sessions (coming in twice a week for three weeks), he was back on the playing field, free from pain. Acupuncture was able to heal his injured toe quickly.
Toe Pain Case #5 – Little Toe, Big Pain
A 62-year-old man came to our clinic complaining of significant pain from his little toe. The pain started in his leg below the knee and traveled to his pinky toe on the left side. His doctors were unable to help, and he resorted to taking pain medication three times a day.
Upon examination, it was apparent that his pain was due to blockage in two lateral channels of his lower leg and foot. Using channel theory, we selected the appropriate acupuncture points and began treatment. After just one session, his pain began to ease. Four treatments later, he was pain-free!
In Chinese medicine, there is a principle that Qi blockage in a channel causes pain. Acupuncture reopens the meridian, allowing Qi to flow smoothly, alleviating the pain in the process. We treat many types of pain by reopening blocked channels, with excellent results. Our last patient in this toe pain acupuncture case series was amazed at how quickly and completely acupuncture resolved his stubborn pain.

What our Clients are Saying
I developed pain in my big toe hiking the 14ers in Colorado. The foot doctor gave me injections which hurt like crazy and didn’t help. Orthotics didn’t help either. Then I tried acupuncture at Raleigh Acupuncture. Dr. Mark got rid of the toe pain in three treatments. I’ve been going to him ever since for various aches and pains. He’s truly amazing.
For the past 13 years I suffered from peripheral neuropathy in my calf, ankle and foot. I tried numerous medications, therapy with lights, neuromuscular massages and back decompression. I felt like I had stones under the ball of my foot. After the first couple of sessions with Dr. Mark, feelings returned to my calf, ankle and the “stone like feeling” under the ball of my foot began subsiding. Thanks to Dr. Mark, I am able now to walk without pain and discomfort. The extraordinary care and attentiveness I am receiving from Raleigh Acupuncture in treating my neuropathy is remarkable and I recommend them without reserve!
