New research* concludes acupuncture relieves neck pain, numbness and electric nerve pain from cervical spondylosis. These common conditions are due to spinal disc degeneration of the neck, which disturbs nerve conduction. Research demonstrates acupuncture relieves neck pain safely and effectively.
Study #1
The study evaluated acupuncture in the treatment of radiculopathy due to cervical spondylosis. Acupuncture therapy achieved a 93% effectiveness rate. The McGill Pain Questionnaire was used to assess pain levels before and after the course of treatment. 60 patients participated in the study.
The Treatment
The following acupuncture points were used:
Dazhui (GV14)
Tianzhu (BL10)
Jiaji (cervical points)
A Qi sensation was obtained with insertion. Needles were then left in place for 30 minutes. Treatments were conducted 3 times a week for 4 weeks (12 sessions total). Patients were given the McGill Pain Questionnaire before, during and after their course of treatment.
Assessment Scale
Treatment benefit was divided into 4 levels:
-Full Recovery: No symptoms. Normal neck movement. McGill pain score ≥95%.
-Significantly Better: Symptoms mostly gone. Slight symptoms remaining during weather changes or fatigue. McGill pain score 70% – 94%.
-Effective: Reduction in symptoms. Greater ease in neck movement. McGill pain score 30% – 69%.
-Not effective: No improvement or worsening of symptoms and/or neck movement. McGill pain score <30%.
Results
Acupuncture recorded a 93% effectiveness rate for resolving neck pain. This corresponds with our own experience treating neck pain at Raleigh Acupuncture.
Study #2
A second neck pain study** at the Beijing Ministry of Health investigated the effectiveness of acupuncture in the treatment of cervical spondylosis. The goal of this study was to standardize acupuncture therapy.
Acupuncture effectively reduced dizziness, headaches, neck stiffness, nausea, blurred vision, tinnitus, and balance problems in neck pain patients.
Acupuncture improves health in the body in specific ways. It dilates blood vessels, increases blood circulation, boosts metabolism, decreases swelling, and reduces inflammation. It also increases arterial blood flow velocity and blood vessel elasticity, and reduces muscular spasm.
Study #3
In a third neck pain study*** conducted at the Xindu District Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, acupuncture was 95.3% effective in alleviating neck pain in the treatment of cervical spondylosis.

What our Clients are Saying
I’m a dentist and over the last 20 years the nature of my work and positions required by my work had resulted in chronic neck pain. It affected my sleep, limited my ability to exercise, and was just a real pain in the neck! A friend at church recommended Raleigh Acupuncture and I gave it a try. I have to say that I was a bit skeptical, but gave it a try because I had tried a number other therapies with no success. I’m glad I did. They resolved my neck pain completely!
Very professional and really clear on what needed to be addressed. I made great progress. My neck pain was resolved in three treatments! Wonderful to find them.
Raleigh Acupuncture resolved my neck pain in six treatments! It was so bad I was taking prescription pain medications three times a day for a month. When that started upsetting my stomach I knew I had to find another solution. I thought I was afraid of needles, but after one treatment I saw how relaxing it was. I fell asleep during most of the treatments!
