This acid reflux research 2 study is entitled, “Acupuncture for the treatment of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease: a systematic review and meta-analysis.” It is a meta-analysis, which evaluated 12 trials involving 1235 patients, and concludes that acupuncture reduces acid reflux better than Western medicine alone and works even better when combined.
Background
The study focuses on GERD (Gastroesophageal reflux disease), which the authors refer to as GORD (same condition, different spelling). It is one of the most common conditions treated in GI clinics. Acupuncture has been used for years to treat acid reflux successfully, and the study authors sought to confirm whether clinical research backup up this fact.
Methods
Researchers searched four English and four Chinese databases up through June 2016. They evaluated 12 randomized controlled trials involving the effectiveness of acupuncture in the treatment of GERD compared to Western medicine. These trials included 1235 patients and demonstrated that those receiving acupuncture combined with Western medicine had superior symptom improvement than those receiving Western treatment alone.
Also, acupuncture patients had lower recurrence rates than those receiving Western medicine. Descriptive analyses indicates that acupuncture also improves the quality of life in GERD patients. This meta-analysis suggests that acupuncture is an effective and safe treatment for GERD.
Introduction
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a stomach disorder where acid rises into the esophagus, causing painful symptoms and complications. More than 8 percent of Western Europe and America have acid reflux in any given year. In addition to burning pain in the stomach and esophagus, symptoms include chronic cough, laryngitis, asthma, and sleep apnea. The cost of treating GERD is high, with average medical bills of $4,000 to $8,000 per patient annually.
Researchers searched four English language electronic databases (PubMed, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library, and Embase) and four Chinese language electronic databases (Chinese Biomedicine, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and Chinese Scientific Journals Database). They also included conference proceedings and dissertations containing unpublished trials through the CNKI and WanFang databases.
Discussion
The results of this acid reflux research 2 demonstrate that acupuncture lowers recurrence of symptoms and promotes higher quality of life when directly compared with Western medicine. Also, there are minimal adverse effects. Furthermore, when acupuncture is combined with Western medicine, there is a significant decrease in symptoms.
Conclusion
This acid reflux research 2 meta-analysis suggests that acupuncture reduces recurrence rates compared with Western medicine when used alone and leads to more significant global symptom improvement when used as an adjunct to Western treatment in patients with GERD. Acupuncture also has a positive impact on quality of life.

What our Clients are Saying
I’ve been coming to Raleigh Acupuncture for the last month and I have nothing but good things to say. They are so knowledgable about the whole body and care for the whole body. I have been taking acid reflux meds for years now every night. If I didn’t take them I had so many problems (burning, hurting stomach, waking up from pain in the middle of the night, etc.). After just the first treatment I was only having to take meds every other day. After 4 treatments now, I take medicine maybe every 3-4 days. The acupuncture has made more of a difference than anything else, and I am so thankful to have found Raleigh Acupuncture.
Thanks Mark for helping relieve my gastroparesis! The nausea, stomach pain, and reflux were driving me crazy. With your help and dedication I’m feeling so much better. Recommended!
Fantastic results for my acid reflux! No more burning pain, and I can eat alot more foods. Great job Raleigh Acupuncture! I’m sending all my friends to you!
I was diagnosed with GERD (acid reflux) 12 years ago and was put on medication at that time. The medication (Prilosec) eased my symptoms but I still always had some level of daily discomfort. I read an article about Chinese medicine being able to cure GERD and decided to explore my options. Raleigh Acupuncture had a good website and reviews so I booked an appointment. Their intake was very thorough and afterward they treated me with acupuncture and Chinese herbs. Within three treatments I was feeling much less symptoms of the GERD, less pain and burning. Within nine treatments my condition was completely resolved. It’s been a year since my last treatment and the GERD has not reappeared. This should be mandatory for all patients suffering from acid reflux. It does not make any sense to take medications for your whole life when a condition can be cured in a month for less than $500.
My acid reflux meds stopped working about three months ago and someone suggested acupuncture so I gave it a try. I couldn’t eat anything without having burning pain from my stomach up into my chest. What a relief from the acupuncture! They totally cured my reflux. I’ve been living with this, just managing it with medications, when all the while I could have cured it with this. Absolutely amazing! I love Raleigh Acupuncture!!
