Mr. J, a 45-year-old insurance agent, presented with a severe case of sciatica characterized by intense pain radiating down his left leg to his foot. The pain, present for over six months, had significantly impaired his daily activities and quality of life. This sciatica case report describes how acupuncture addressed his condition and resolved his pain.
Patient Case Symptoms
- Sharp and shooting pain along the left sciatic nerve pathway.
- Numbness and tingling sensations in the left leg and foot.
- Difficulty standing, walking, or sitting for prolonged periods.
- Sleep disturbances due to persistent discomfort.
- Increased stress and anxiety as the result of constant pain and inability to exercise and perform daily functions.
Medical History
Mr. J had previously consulted with orthopedic specialists and tried conventional treatments, including pain medications and physical therapy. However, the relief provided was temporary, and the severity of his symptoms persisted.
Acupuncture Intervention
Mr. J opted for acupuncture as an alternative approach to managing his sciatica. The acupuncturist conducted a thorough assessment, considering both his physical symptoms and overall health. The treatment plan involved a series of acupuncture sessions designed to address the underlying imbalances contributing to his sciatic nerve pain. These imbalances included a piriformis muscle in persistent spasm, tight gluteus medius and minimus muscles, blockage in the bladder and gallbladder channels of the hip and leg, and nerve damage from prolonged compression of the sciatic nerve.
Sciatica Acupuncture Protocol
The practitioner in this sciatica case report focused on releasing the spasm in Mr. J’s hip piriformis muscle and promoting blood circulation to heal the damaged piriformis, gluteus medius, and minimus muscles. In addition, the practitioner stimulated acupuncture points along the bladder and gallbladder meridians to promote qi and blood circulation in the lower back, hip, leg, hamstring, and calf. All needles were hair-thin, sterile, and single-use.
The practitioner used electroacupuncture to enhance the effects of treatment. This technique applies a low-frequency electrical current to the acupuncture needles. This aimed to boost the therapeutic effects by stimulating nerve function and reducing inflammation. In addition, they added additional points to address stress and tension, as emotional factors often contribute to musculoskeletal pain. This holistic approach aimed to address the physical and emotional aspects of the patient’s condition.
Sciatica Treatment Outcome
Following the first session, Mr. J reported having significant relief for three days. We explained that this was a positive sign, indicating that his prognosis was excellent. If the body responds to treatment, it will typically continue to respond. As reported in this sciatica case report, that proved to be the case for him. After his second treatment, he was pain-free for five days. The pain returned after that but at only fifty percent. He continued to improve with each session. After his seventh visit, with treatments spaced one week apart, Mr. J reported a complete resolution of pain. The shooting pain along his left leg was gone, and he experienced normal flexibility and mobility. The numbness and tingling sensations were gone, allowing him to resume daily activities.
Case Follow-Up
The practitioner scheduled once-a-month follow-up maintenance appointments over the next three months to monitor Mr. J’s progress and adjust the treatment plan as needed. After three months, treatments were terminated. Since then, Mr. J has returned to the clinic for other health issues and has never reported trouble with his hip.

What our Clients are Saying
I’m a semi-professional weight lifter. I never had a problem until my hip went out doing squats. The pain was tremendous, like a sharp nerve pain down the back of my leg into the calf. It had sidelined me for two months while I tried unsuccessfully to work out the pain. Then a buddy suggested acupuncture. He had a similar hip pain and got relief at Raleigh Acupuncture. I went there and got treated. They told me to stop stretching until the injury was healed. I followed their instructions and got half a dozen treatments. The pain started easing after the first few treatments. I continued for another 6 treatments and was totally cured. I was able to get back to lifting with no residual effects of the injury. I’ve recommended this practice to a number of friends since that time and they all have had good experiences.
Ever since my hip replacement I had terrible hip pain that radiated down my leg into my foot. They were talking about redoing the hip, which I didn’t want to do, so I tried acupuncture. The doctors at Raleigh Acupuncture were wonderful. They gave me lots of time and told me what they were doing. They got rid of 90% of my pain. I can live with that!
I’ve been suffering from sciatic pain for years, since I was in a car accident. I tried everything and nothing helped. I couldn’t walk right and had a bad limp. My son made me go to Raleigh Acupuncture (I am afraid of needles!). They told me they would treat me 4 times to see how I responded. Well, I responded great. I had to get 6 treatments to get rid of the pain. Now I walk fine (no limp) and feel all better. Great place!
